One of my favorite ways to build trust is by compiling a personal operating manual based on feedback from those who have worked with you closely in the past. Then share it with your team or direct reports. Of course, this not the only method.
Everyone knows how important it is to have a mentor, but it’s even more critical to have an internal sponsor. So my question is should your mentor be internal to your company or external, and why? If you only have a mentor, then seek to make them a mentor/sponsor, but if you are lucky enough to have a sponsor, seek mentorship from outside your company.
Throughout my career, I have often thought about “What is my Secret Sauce”? At various points, I thought it was my curiosity, IQ, EQ, grit, credibility, social capital, ability to learn and adapt, always being a giver. The truth is that these attributes comprise my character and are an amalgamation from my life experiences. Knowing how when, where, and why to tap into various components of my character is my true “Secret Sauce” and of course my sense of humor.
